I recommend you call and get current pricing information. These prices are just ball park and can change at any time. We also recommend total casulectomy for saline filled silicone implants and en bloc for silicone gel or gummy bear. Speak to the doctor ahead of time and make sure that he/she will be performing a total capsulectomy.
SURGEON LIST NOTE:
We assume no reponsibility for this list,
and suggest you ask many questions, research carefully,
talk to other women who have used these surgeons, and
request to see "before and after" photos from the PS. We are not
paid to advertise the following surgeons. If you have
further information, good or bad, about the following
surgeons, feel free to email us and tell about your
positive/negative experience.

What about the Sacramento area?
I've had implants for 6 years and always regretted it. I'm ready to make the move for explant - though I'm nervous. Hoping to have it done in the Sacramento area.
Thanks! Ann

Hi Ann,
I live in the Sacramento area too and am looking for a PS experienced with explantation. I consulted with a PS at the PS Center in Roseville last year who said they could do it. I'm not sure how experienced they are though.

| Thanks. He's on the recommended list but has no website. I really wanted to go local and found a PS that I like but he hasn't done as many explants as I would like. That makes me worried b/c I keep reading that unless the PS is very skilled at explants it is likely the patient's breasts will ended up looking deformed. He also said he would do en bloc but given the fact that I haven't had any health problems my implants can be removed under local and the capsule kept in. I actually was considering it but now am afraid to keep the capsule in b/c of possible infection later on. He will remove capsule if that is what I want, which is good, en bloc too if that is what I want. I'm just worried that he isn't as skilled w/ explants and my boobs won't look good. So, now I'm considering making the trip to San Fran since that's the closest PS on the list. It's not what I want, but I'm so scared now. I might talk to the local PS a bit more...ask him more questions. I'm starting to get depressed. This is all I can think about . I didn't think it was going to be this complicated. Just make a small incision and pull the suckers out. Now I have to worry about deformity, infection, etc. I wish this was easier. These darn implants!

I had two PS tell me I don't need a lift and right now w/ the implants in, I don't look I do. My concern is when the 370cc implants are out of my body. Those suckers had to been lifting me up a bit. It may be that I get the explant first and later on if it looks like I could use a lift :) I'll get one. Or I might say, hey when you take these out and they look saggy, give me a lift (even if it is a little lift)! I don't know if you can really do that though. I'm sure they want everything decided on prior to surgery. I wish I could go to Dr. Melmed b/c I read what he can do. He is quite the skilled surgeon. I think I read that he can rearrange tissue to give optimal results. Wow. He charges ALOT - but worth it. I wouldn't be able to afford him right now. I think I might email or call his office and get some advice. I may go to the local PS for the capsuloctomy and just pray that I come out looking normal. I will check out Dr. Alpert before deciding. Thanks. It's nice to have you girls to talk with (even if it is via email). My husband is also a "boob man" so I don't talk to him that much about it. He knows I want this and he is trying to be supportive but I can tell that he is not happy with my decision and somewhat annoyed. I'm NOT letting that influence me though. I made the PS laugh when I told him I want to save the implants so I can put them in the bedside table drawer so my husband can play with them any time he wants!

Hi Ann,
I just read through the posts. I'm not sure about leaving the capsule in. Even if you don't have symptoms. I just wouldn't recommend that. I went to two different surgeons that told me that I wouldn't need a lift. I was shocked because I had gained quite a bit of weight. They were pretty much both right.
However, the capsule comments concerns me and no I have not personally heard of anyone that has used that surgeon.

Thanks Beth. I thought I would need a lift too. I breast-fed so I'm really surprised. Although, my breasts prior to implant were not saggy, just deflated. I guess a lift fixes sags not flat tires. That was why I got implants in the first place. BUT I would rather go back to the flat tire look. It makes me sick thinking about these foreign objects in my body. Unlike you, I never felt like I was born with them. They feel heavy and I sense their presence all the time, especially lately (the pain on the left side as I mentioned). They just never felt right. AND they are too big for my frame. Both PSs that I've seen for explant said the same thing. I was happy they acknowledged that. And, if I go with the local PS, I will have him remove capsule despite there being no infection. Who knows, there can be an infection which I am unaware of.
How have the "girls" handled your weight going up and down? Sounds like you haven't had too much of a problem at all. I've gained and lost...and still am trying to lose, so I wonder what affect that will have. I want to hit my target weight before explant so we know exactly what we're dealing with.
BTW, I will insist on having the capsule removed. How long did your surgery take? The PS told me an hour for explant only. Of course, that was if I didn't have the capsule removed. I don't know how difficult it is to remove it. Does that mean I'll need drains?

My explant took an hour with the capsules being removed. I believe the drains are always necessary. You should have them no doubt.
How did the girls deal with the weight loss and gain and loss again?
The girls are doing fine. I'm amazed I don't have stretch marks or anything. My butt on the other hand is as flat as a pancake and even when I was 117 before I got the implants, I still had that little bubble butt. Not sure what is going on there.

At least I know you're not considering butt implants! Goodness...butt implants...what is the world coming to!
I won't even shop right now. I'm waiting until after I get explanted. No more buying tops that are 3 sizes bigger than my bottoms!

Oh, no, no butt implants for me! I've learned my lesson. So weird as I always hated my butt. Not sure why but I did. I guess it is a self esteem issue. Now I have the butt that I always wished I had and I hate it. I want the bubble butt back. I'm just a mess. I'll settle for the flat butt. I was always so thin but because of the bubble butt, my slacks always had to be a size larger because of it. I had a little bit of junk in the trunk and it is all gone now. I hate that Jessica Simpson look. No butt at all and I think I'm headed that way. I've learned my lesson though. Will accept whatever happens to this body. I believe that if I could make it to the gym, I'd be looking much better but the pain in my side prevents me from any exercise. It will all come out in the wash I'm sure.

Dr. Alpert's office wasn't rude or anything, I think I just expected them to have more to say. The gal said he's great ($250 consultation fee) but she suggested finding a good surgeon in my area so I wouldn't have to make the drive there. She couldn't give me any prices or rough estimates over the phone, which other places have done. I told her he was on a list of recommended surgeons for explant surgery and she said he's good at everything. I'm sure he does great work, but I'm going to leave that one alone. The gal at Dr. Melmed's office was super friendly and sounded like she really wanted to help me. Obviously he has great staff. Sometimes that initial phone call tell you a lot. I do have a local PS that I like. Very skilled, but not an expert on explants (like the majority of PSs). I've requested before and after photos. I'll keep you informed on this guy. Boy, I wish Dr. Melmed lived here!

| I think that the gal up front was just trying to get across that he's a good surgeon, but I was like "Yeah, aren't they all good at everything". Arggg. I didn't speak to him directly. I'm sure he wouldn't be on the list if he wasn't good. I think somewhere on this site Dr. M's price for explant was listed. I can't find it.

Ann,
I believe it is 6,600 with lift. Don't quote me on that but I think that is what Kathy said.
Also, it is good to speak to the office manager when calling these doctors. I called a few when there were questions, and the regular girls that answer the phones aren't as knowledgable as the office manager. So I always speak to the manager because then I can get a true feel for what the doctor is like.
Also, it always helps to see them in person but if you have to travel, sometimes that just isn't an option so I can certainly understand that.
Oh, think it is odd too that they couldn't answer the cost issue over the phone. That sounds odd.

Jen Dr. Huang in Denver is supposed to be the cheapest out there, I think she is right around $4,000. We have heard really good things about her, might want to think about her as well.
HI JEN,
YES, THAT IS ANOTHER OPTION FOR YOU BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT SHE DOES BREAST AUGS TOO AND ACTUALLY PROMOTES A BA SITE. HOWEVER, I HEARD THAT SHE IS VERY GOOD AND CHEAP. SOMETHING YOU MIGHT WANT TO LOOK INTO.
I THINK THAT IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE IF THE SURGEON'S KNOW HOW TO DO EXPLANTS AND DON'T ENCOURAGE YOU TO HAVE THEM REPLACED. SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THEY PROMOTE JUST HOW GOOD THEY ARE AT EXPLANTING AND NOT PUSHING FOR REPLACEMENT.

I emailed Dr. Melmed and Dr. Kolb with my pix...so we'll see if they respond and what they suggest.
Do you know if the $4000 fee with Dr. Huang is just forthe expant or with the lift as well? I think I definately need a lift!!

Ok here it goes...i am NOT a fast typist but I have written out the phone message from Dr. Kolb and will post what she said...my fingers are going to be sore after this!! LOL
" Hi Jennifer, this is Dr. Susan Kolb...it sound like many of your sympotoms are consistant with Bio Toxins from mold or silicone toxicity...possible if the implants were textured. Textured implants cause this expecially if you had a closed capsulotamy(spelling??!!).
I would be happy to see you for an en bloc removal, you will probably need a breast lift. It's possible for you to fly out for surgery, 2 days prior, see me for consult, and HMP(I couldn't understand what she said here...but maybe lab work???) the next day and surgery the following day. talk to Lisa at extention 116 and she can tell you where to stay in town. You should plan on staying 2-7 days depending on whether or not you have someone in California to remove drains and stitches.
I'd have to see you before saying what size you would go back to, hopefully you would still be a B, depending on if you have gained or lost weight. Your breasts don't look exactly the same, but I need to see you before commenting on the cosmetic thing.
Right now I am working with an injured arm, so I am booking surgery for December. If you are interested in that time frame, all you need to do is contact me back with your age, any drug allergies, medications, and whether or not your implants are textured. We can send you out a form with a checklist of information that we need prior to surgery and you can fill it out and fax it back to us.
Thank you"
Well let me now what you guys think...she is the pricey one right?? The difference in price between some of these doctors is a little disconcerting...Seems Dr. melmed is approximately $6-7K and Dr. Kolb is around $11K ...right? How is it possible that some docs are almost double the price...that just doen't make sense to me...
Anyway still plugging along here....trying to get a clear understanding on whether or not I am eligible for this lawsuit. I cannot understand how a P.S. is not liable for saying the "implants are good for life" when that is a bald faced lie? And it the implants malfunctioned...ie: ruptured, leaked have capsular contracture...then it would seem logical that EVERY woman with those circumstances should be compensated. Afer all the only reason the are coming out is because the product malfunctioned...a product that I was toled would last for life...and has now possibly been the culprit of many weird symptoms I have had and just never even considered could have been from the implants....GRRRR!!! Any thoughts or suggestions on these issues...and chance I can recuperate this money?
Hanging on by a thread over here...
Jen

HI JEN,
I'LL ADDRESS THE COST ISSUE FIRST. I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHY DR. KOLB IS MORE EXPENSIVE BUT CAN TELL YOU THAT SHE WILL DO ALL THE BLOOD WORK THAT I BELIEVE IS NECESSARY AND TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT SHE FINDS. I DO BELIEVE THAT THE LADIES THAT BECOME ILL FROM IMPLANTS NEED TO BE TESTED THOUROUGHLY. NOT MANY DOCTORS DO THIS. SHE SENDS YOU HOME WITH A CUSTOMIZED PLAN IN ORDER TO REMOVE THE TOXINS FROM YOUR BODY. KAY COULD EXPLAIN MORE OF THIS TO YOU BECAUSE SHE HAS GONE TO KOLB AND FOLLOWED HER PROTOCOL.
SHE ALSO BROUGHT UP A VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE. THAT BEING ABOUT TEXTURED IMPLANTS. I SEE THAT YOU HAVE SALINE FILLED BUT I'M NOT SURE IF THEY ARE THE TEXTURED TYPE OR NOT. I KNOW THAT WITH THE TEXTURED IMPLANTS, NOT ONLY ARE THEY HARDER TO REMOVE BUT THEY START FLAKING OR BREAKING DOWN FASTER THAN THE SMOOTH SALINE IMPLANTS. THAT FLAKING THAT COMES OFF IS SILICONE AND WILL MOST LIKELY BE FOUND IN THE CAPSULE. IT COULD BE A NIGHTMARE IF YOU GO TO A DOCTOR THAT DOESN'T REMOVE THE ENTIRE CAPSULE. IF THAT DOCTOR DOESN'T, THERE POSSIBLY COULD BE SILICONE IN YOUR BODY. I HEARD THAT THE TEXTURED IMPLANTS ARE KNOWN FOR FLAKING OR BREAKING DOWN.
DR. KOLB NOT ONLY EXPLANTS YOU BUT RUNS BLOODWORK AND SENDS YOU HOME WITH A DETOX PLAN. PERSONALLY I FEEL THIS IS SO IMPORTANT AND I WISH THAT I HAD THE MONEY TO VISIT HER. SOME OF US JUST DON'T BOUNCE BACK AND I BELIEVE THAT WE SHOULD ALL DETOX OUR BODIES AFTER EXPLANT BECAUSE THE FASTER YOU RID YOUR BODY OF THE TOXINS, THE FASTER YOU WILL HEAL AND BE ABLE TO GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE.
I WILL SAY THAT IF YOU HAVE TEXTURED IMPLANTS, MY RECOMMENDATION WOULD NOT TO GO WITH DR. MELMED. JUST MY OPINION. FROM WHAT I READ, HE JUST DOESN'T BELIEVE THAT THE CAPSULE CAN BE TOXIC OR CONTAIN SILICONE FOR THOSE OF US THAT HAVE HAD SALINE FILLED IMPLANTS. SO NOT TRUE IN MY OPINION. MY CAPSULES WERE SO TOXIC THAT I DEVELOPED A VERY BAD INFECTION. THEY MIGHT NOT HAVE CONTAINED SILIONE GEL BUT THEY SURE CONTAINED BACTERIA, ENOUGH TO CAUSE AN INFECTION AND I'M SURE THAT TOXINS GET IN THE CAPSULE FOR THE IMPLANTS BEING IN THE BODY FOR SO LONG.
JUST MY OPINION FOR WHATEVER IT IS WORTH..........

hi jenn, yes it is so frusterating,im sorry your going through it ,me too!i just want the damn capsules out and reconstruction!dr.kolb is excellent,i only wish we had clearer communication before i took my family to atlanta to drive home and have a nervous breakdown!!!but you have to hang in there, and you definatley need the capsules out.i have a ton of the new safe silicone in my capsules,my implants w manufacturers defect and many small ruptures out almost one year ago,now trying to get these capsules out.money the prices are unreal for me since im now disabled but married so i dont getnothing w.o asking.like a kid in a candy store.can i please have this doctor.we will get through this....i really believe dr kolb rocks!!!and capsules are so so important,i can feel how thickmine are.beth seen my pictures.nasty long cow heavy and hard at the end utters.lol.but you have to crack then laygh.dr melmid is awsome too,but the texured thing beth and maybe kathy said is true.i know its so hard to understand how 5 grand to get them in,and 2 or 3x more to get them out!but these drs know there stuff.i prayed and cryed for dr kolb, but her employees got yelled at right in front of me!i never got any info or papers to fill out in the mail or by fax,and i stand by my mail box.so she also defends us,but after taking the 3 of us up there cost i could only guess about 500 or more.i was so upset we went shopping afterwards and spent more money to stop me crying and wanting to give up.just leave the capsules in.keep fighting girl,it will happen,im to go this month for my capsules and reconstruction, which at this point i could care less what i look like,i just want the excruciating pain to be gone.it will come and we are here... kerry hugs

Hello Beth, I have contacted the doctors that are in my area and have had little fedback from them. Would it be possible to fax my MRI results that show free or existing silicone to a doctor you would reccomend and see what they have to say? I would be glad to travel if need be. I am sending my results to the doctor at UCLA as suggested by his assistant, but I would like to get an opinion from a doctor that comes highly reccomened by your site and is familiar with this situation.
Sincerely, Shae

HI SHAE,
WELL IF YOU ARE WILLING TO TRAVEL AND COST IS NOT A FACTOR, MY OPINION IS THAT DR. FENG IN OHIO IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST. I DO NOT THINK THAT SHE WILL GIVE HER OPINION OVER THE PHONE THOUGH. SHE WILL DO THE SILICONE MAPPING PRIOR TO EXPLANT. THE OTHER DOCTORS DO NOT DO THIS.
MY SECOND OPINION WOULD BE DR. KOLB. I KNOW THAT IF YOU SEND HER AN EMAIL AND PUT YOUR PHONE NUMBER ON IT, SHE WILL CALL YOU. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT JUST TO GET HER OPINION. SHE IS ALSO AN EXCELLENT SURGEON.
ALSO, DR. MELMED WILL ANSWER EMAILS. YOU CAN SEND HIM YOUR PHOTOS AND HE WILL GIVE YOU HIS OPINION. NOT SURE ABOUT THE MRI RESULTS BUT IT IS WORTH A TRY ASKING HIM.
THEN THERE IS DR. BARNETT WHICH IS ALSO VERY, VERY GOOD. I HAVE HEARD THAT SHE ALSO ANSWERS MESSAGES. AGAIN, I DO NOT KNOW IF SHE WILL GIVE YOU INFO IF YOU FAX HER THE MRI RESULTS BUT I'D SAY IT IS SURE WORTH A TRY.
AS FAR AS ALL THE DOCTORS ON THE LIST, THOSE ARE MY 4 FAVORITES AND REALLY USED THE MOST THAN THE OTHERS.
JUST MY OPINION BUT IF YOU HAVE A RUPTURED SILICONE IMPLANT, DR. FENG BY FAR IS THE WAY TO GO. DR. KOLB IS GOOD TOO BUT DOESN'T DO THE MAPPING AND IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE ALREADY HAD THAT DONE SO IT MIGHT NOT BE PROBLEM THERE.
LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS. ALSO, I'M SURE THAT THE LADIES IN THE GROUP THAT HAVE SEEN THESE EXCELLENT SURGEONS CAN GIVE YOU THEIR OPINION AS WELL.
