QUESTIONS FOR SURGEONS FOR REMOVAL OF IMPLANTS

Ask if he/she is familiar with 'the en bloc procedure' for removing implants. Ask how many procedures of this nature he/she has performed, and when the last one was performed.

Have the plastic surgeon explain, step-by-step, how the procedure will take place. Begin with how you will be "prepped." for surgery.

If you have the sub-muscular placement, discuss if and how the muscle will be repaired if any damage or trauma has occured to the muscle.

Ask if it would be possible for you to view some "before and after" photos of explantation surgeries he/she has performed.

If the plastic surgeon did not mention drains in the explanation of how the procedure will be done, ask if he/she will use drains to prevent accumulation of fluid and infection.

Ask how long the surgery will take and what type of anesthesia will be administered and will it be administered by an M.D.

Ask if you will need a lift, and if so what kind do they recommend?  Discuss the different types of lifts and what would be best for you.

Ask how long initial recovery will take. Ask the length of time it will be until you are able to function independently at home. Find out how long you will need someone to stay with you after surgery. It is advisable that someone stay with you for the first 24 hours and possibly a little longer. depending upon your recovery progress.

Ask how long it will be before you can resume normal activity. Everybody recovers at different rates, but most women are 'out-of-commission' for about two weeks, and cannot raise their arms above their heads for a month or longer. Find out how long you are not to lift anything heavier than three pounds, how long you should not drive, and how long should you wait to participate in any strenuous activities such as jogging, sex, exercising...etc. .

Ask what size he/she expects you to be after the surgery.

Ask if he/she will prescribes antibiotics after surgery to prevent the complication of infection. Discuss all post-op medications he will use and what their purposes are. Ask if it would be possible to fill them the day before surgery to provide the convenience of them being available directly following surgery.

Ask if he/she will film the surgery on video if you desire. If so, request a copy for yourself. Ask whether or not you need to supply a blank tape. If this is not possible, ask if you may provide a camera to have the surgery photographed.

Ask what type of bandage he/she will use and how long it is to remain on.

Ask when you will need to start wearing the sports bra.

Ask for the phone numbers you will need to get in touch with him/her after-hours.

Request that any cysts or other suspicious tissue be sent to the pathologist for examination and report. Tell him/her that you would like to have any removed suspicious tissue and cysts returned to you with your implants. You may wish to have another pathologist examine them at a later date.

Explain that you wish to have your implants returned to you. Ask which pathology service he/she uses and ask for their contact information. Ask him/her the proper procedure to use to ensure that your implants are returned to you. They are yours and belong to YOU.

Explain that you would like to request copies of the Operative Report and the Pathology Report from this surgery. Ask about proper procedure to ensure that you receive these copies.

                        <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Once you have selected a plastic surgeon and have set a surgery date, be sure to discuss the following with your doctor:

List all medications that you take, including the strength and frequency that you take them.

Inform your doctor of any drug allergies that you may have. (Also, let your doctor know if you are allergic to latex or talc.)

Make a list of all of any symptoms you may have, include dates that they began, and how they have progressed since they began. Include a history of all surgeries you have had.

The most recent operative report (if there has been more then one surgery) will contain helpful information about your implants, such as: the manufacturer, the model number, the lot number, and the will indicate how the implant was positioned. (Include any pathology reports that you might have.)  Also take your original augmentation operative report with you. This gives the surgeon even more information on your surgery.

Also, bring any recent MRI, mammogram, xeromamogram, or ultrasound reports. If you have had any recent lab work, bring these results with you, even though, your doctor will probably have them repeated prior to surgery. A comparison of the most recent lab work and the lab work he will do will be helpful to your doctor.  New mammograms are not recommended prior to surgery due to the risk of rupture during the procedure, request an ultrasound or MRI if possible.

Beth,

I will print your list and bring it with me to my consult on Monday.  You have saved me so much anguish in trying to gather my thoughts and come up with questions (without leaving something REALLY important out!)

Again,  Thanks

The name of my surgeon is Dinu Mistry, MD.  She is located in Boise, Idaho.  She is originally from Houston or Dallas (I can't remember).  If you know of another surgeon in my general area (NV, WA, OR, ID) I would appreciate a recommendation.  I have faith in my surgeon, but would love to get a second opinion from a recommended source.  I have my surgery consult next Monday (Oct 2).

Thanks for your response and for all that you have contributed to this website...I see your responses all over the spectrum.

Lisa,

Did you see the list I sent you in the introduction thread?  There is a doctor there that is in Washington state.  Please take a look at it because those are the doctors that we recommend.

Lisa, you didn't happen to grow up in Pennsylvania/New Jersey did you?  My best friend when I was a kid was Lisa Bowman.  I know the chances of the name being the same are slim to none but I saw your name and just wondered.  My friend moved to New Jersey with her family to breed Great Danes.  From there, I don't know where she went and have often wondered.

If you have a problem with that surgeon list, please let me know and I'll be happy to help you.  That goes with any questions you may have on the board.

Thanks for the reply...I did see that there is a doc in Washington and also Oregon.  I will look into that further.

I did not grow up as Lisa Bowman, I got the last name when I married my husband - he grew up in Florida, Tennessee, Arizona and Idaho (Airforce brat).  What a strange coincidence.

Thanks,

Lisa

HI TINA,

I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR STORY.  ARE YOU HAVING COMPLICATIONS?  SICK?

YOU WANT TO HAVE YOUR IMPLANTS SO IF THERE IS A LAWSUIT, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THEM AT A LATER DATE.  SOME LADIES SEND THEM OFF SO THAT THEY CAN BE ANALYZED.  SOME LADIES DON'T GET THEIR IMPLANTS AND THEN YEARS LATER GET SICK AND HAVE NO WAY OF GETTING THEIR RECORDS FROM THEIR PS AND HAVE NO WAY TO PROVE WHAT TYPE OF IMPLANTS THEY HAD.  IMPORTANT TO HAVE YOUR RECORDS AND/OR YOUR IMPLANTS FOR PROOF.

Thanks for the reply.  No, I'm not having what I consider to be complications (after having read many of your stories).  Minimal pain at this point really.  Just want them out, they are too big, and feel just awful, etc.  I have only had them in 3 years, so I hopefully won't have some of the problems other ladies have.  Thank you so much for this forum.

I have a consult set up with Dr. Fenner in Chicago for Oct 6.  I read that I can request my implants come back to me, do they HAVE to go a lab first?

ALSO, I'm planning on a mammogram.  I suppose that it should wait til after the implants are removed?

Beth and/or anyone:

I have 2 consults set up for the beginning of Oct.  I'm nervous and excited.  I will ask each doc how the procudure will take place. I want to know, is it better to have the doc suck out the saline properly or pull out the whole implant?  Sorry if I asked this before, I can't remember if I did or didn't.:foundmybrain

HI SCARED,

IT IS BETTER TO HAVE THE DOCTOR TAKE THE IMPLANT OUT INTACT AND THEN REMOVE THE CAPSULE SINCE YOU HAVE SALINE IMPLANTS.  MAKE SURE THAT CAPSULE WILL BE REMOVED, IT IS IMPORTANT.

YOU DON'T WANT THEM TO DRAIN IT BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT CAN BE GROWING IN THERE AND YOU DON'T WANT ANY OF THAT GETTING INTO YOUR BODY.  :yikes

I met with Dr. Fenner in Evanston IL and like him and scheduled my explant and lift for Jan 7th, 2008.  However,  I'm still waiting for my quote.  He quotes based on each case.  I'm hoping this is a good thing that he just doesn't have flat fees without considering all circumstances.  Has anyone else run into this?

Beth, I am THRILLED.  I cannot wait to have these out.  I was so upset about the whole thing now I'm excited and that's a great feeling!  I wish it was sooner, but with schedules it's the best time for the family.  My daughter is sitting on my lap right now and she and I LOVE the Halloween graphics you have floating around on here.

This forum is so huge, I never know where to post.  I finally got my quote and it's $2000 for explant, $4000 for lift and $2500 for the OR and anesthesia.  There were optional fees and services on the quote, one was vitamins ($100!) and a pain pump ($300, I think).  Will I need either of these?  I think I'm have a pretty good pain tolerance (knock on wood), so I don't really think the pump will be necessary.

Any advice?

HI LAURIE,

I CAN'T REALLY ANSWER THAT, IT IS REALLY ALL PERSONAL PREFERENCE.  I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MUCH PAIN YOU WILL BE IN.  I TOOK PERCOCET FOR MY PAIN.  I ALSO WAS NOT GIVEN ANY VITAMINS.  SO I WOULD THINK ABOUT THIS AND DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.

Hi Martha!

I wanted mine because one had ruptured and I wanted to see it.  I wanted to know if it was at the valve or if it was a tear (is that spelled right?).  Also, they can have mold growing in them.  I was going to have to fight with insurance so I wanted all information possible.

I haven't been on here in a while.  Are you having health issues, are you okay?  Let me know if you need any advice, support or info.  Nice to meet you!

Hi Scared....I opted for the pain pump and a Biz Monitor.....the Monitor is used when you are suppose to be "under" to make sure you are staying "under" during the surgery - - and not waking up but unable to communicate. I was given scripts for pain medication the day before so I could get them filled........I took them and they helped me to sleep and rest the whole next day.....I was glad to get a day of healing in w/o being in pain....my pain was really managed well. I never did get sick as I had pills to take for nausea........

Seems like yesterday I went through that....and it's been a whole year. ..hard to believe.

God Bless, Frankie

Dear Beth,

My PS who originally put my implants in gave me a Rx to have a mamogram prior to explantation. I see here on your list below that this is not recommended for fear of rupture during surgery. I was thinking that since there is a chance I feel so ill because they may be leaking mold and fungus, this would be a bad idea to squeeze them right now. Do a lot of doctors ask for this before hand? Is this a sign that he doesn't know about  explantation? I'm doing all my research and have requested a consultation with another surgeon so I may compare.

Best, -Lisa

I DIDN'T HAVE TO HAVE ONE BUT I KNOW FOR SURE THAT ONE OF THE SURGEON'S ON OUR LIST WILL NOT DO EXPLANT UNTIL YOU HAVE A MAMMO.

IF YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE DOING THIS, WHICH I KNOW I WOULD, SEE IF YOU CAN FIND ANOTHER PS.

Dear Beth,
I am happy to announce my explantation will be this Tuesday with Dr. Ahn. I can't thank you and this group enough! I will have a long road of recovery ahead of me, physically, emotionally, mentally, and last but not least financially. I am thankful I learned what I did when I did. Ofcorse I wish it were sooner, but better late than never. I am willing to take some photos of my road to what I hope is a road to recovery, and post my story. I have just submitted my explantation date. I hope to inspire, save, and educate women.
Wish me the best, please vote for president and pray for me on Tuesday!

LOL -Lisa

Dear CH,
I don't think it would be fair to say because I'm having extra work done in the way of a lift plus, nipple reduction. My case is also such that my first implant PS didn't get my left breast right the first time and had to go in a second to fix it. Apparently the more times you go in, the less times you have left to go back making this time the last. I had another surgeon's price with me (my fist PS who implanted). He said he would explant for free (feeling a little guilty) and I would pay for the lift, en-block and nipple reduction. My insurance is'nt covering it either, though I will fight with them later to see what I can do about it. I will say Dr. Ahn was aprox 2-3 thousand more, but far more qualified, does much more beautiful work, she is thourough and precise, and she is sending my implants to the pathologist to test for mildew and fungus and what ever else may be in there where I think my first surgeon would prefer putting them in the garbage. It's costing me a thousand more to have it done in Manhattan at an excellent facility as opposed to NJ too. My advise to you is shop around fast, (fast because you need to get those things OUT!). Get two or three comparisons of well recommended doctors, ask for the before and after pictures (they say they en-block and explant until you ask for the photos and they can't come up with them!) and see what your money buys you. For three thousand more, I'm getting the best doctor there is to do the job, do it right, peace of mind, and at a great facility, I think it's worth it, even though it's my November mortgage payment. When it came down to the house or this surgery I put the surgery first. I hope this advise helps. Let me know. Best Regards, -Lisa

Dear CH,

Other members shared their photos of what Dr. Ahn did for them. I'm sure if you ask Dr. Ahn she will have many photos since she's been doing it since 1992. Ask our member MarshaL to share with you, meanwhile I will also ask her for you.

Hi there.  I just wanted to say thank you for starting this site.  I think it is wonderful.  Btw, do you know of any stories about girls that didn't need a lift after explant?  I am 28 and have had my saline implants in for a little over a year.  They were placed under the muscle.   They were pretty perky to begin with so hopefully they will go back to where they were.  I am going in next week to get them out and then going to Jamaica two weeks later.  What do you think about that?

You should bounce right back (no pun intended!).  You have your age on your side and the fact that you only had them for a year or so and having them placed under the muscle helps as well.

I was 40 when I had my implants removed and they were under the muscle for 8 years.  No lift and I'm doing fine.

Did you have health problems because of your implants?  I thought saline was supposed to be safe.  I am not taking mine out because of health reasons, I just think they look trashy.  I was just wondering.

Thanks,
Maria

Hi Beth! Thanks for all the info you have posted on this website. I have and appt. for a consult with Dr. H Jae Chun next month and I really hope he tells me what I want to hear!! I got my first surgery at 19 yrs old (i know!!) and at the time I was a mere 100 lbs! I was a 32 a and I went to be a 32 C. Since then I matured as a woman as you naturally do and have put on about 40 lbs. My breast now are a 34DDD. They make me look 20+ lbs heavier than I am. I hate them and I'm hoping Dr. Chun can help me out. My biggest concern is that I have what is called a double bubble and I'm sure I'll need a lift but I havent had kids yet. Do you have any knowledge as to what would be the best route to take? I'm 30 BTW and I don't want to have those ugly scars! I live in Los Angeles. Do you think Dr. Chun is the best doctor to go to?

Thank you so much for the link. I have only one surgeon that my insurance will cover, but he does have a good reputation here, would have been my second choice.

Not sure if I have been sick from them or not but have had several health issues, so maybe there's a connection. Actually looking forward to this I think.....feeling more and more uncomfortable with them inside me and for so long. I had no idea until now. Wake up is right? Wished so much I'd never had them put in and had been healthy and happy with the petite, boyish figure I had. Who can tell you at 21, tho, right? It's all I could think about. I only got large B to small C ones as I had AA before, so they are really quite small. Hopefully, that may make the procedure easier.

I love that I found this site for support. Thank you ladies.

Beth, Is that a Jack Russell Terrier? I have an 11-year-old baby girl who I did obedience and agility with, could not live without her making me laugh every day. She will be a great comfort during my recovery I'm sure.

She is a mixed breed.  She is part JR and part toy fox terrier.  She just loves the outdoors and is just a bundle of energy.  Can you believe she is 12 1/2 years old?  She also has a brother named Stanley.  He does not like being outside as much as she does.  The two of them are so funny and each have their own little ways about them.  Stanley is my wise old man and Daisy thinks everyone is her best buddy.  You just can't beat dogs.  They have helped me through so much!

Stanley flunked out of obedience school and I didn't take Daisy.  However, you know what they say, their trainer has to be a be part of their training and I'm just such a push over when it comes to them.

No doubt about it, your JR will help you a great deal get through your surgery.

See, you opened up a can of worms.  I just love animals and can go on and on about my two kids.  I'll have to post a picture of my Stanley.  He is an Italian Greyhound with the IQ of about 200!  LOL  I wish I had his brain!!!!!:doggie
